The catalogue of José Manuel López López (Madrid, 1956) ranges from solo works, chamber, mixed and electronic works or scores for multimedia formats, to those for large symphonic formations and opera. His most representative compositions include Lituus for brass quartet and electronics, premiered at the IRCAM in Paris by soloists from Ensemble Intercontemporain, in 1991; Concerto for violin and orchestra, first performed in Madrid by Anne Mercier and the Spanish National Orchestra in 1995, conducted by Howard Griffiths; Movimientos for two pianos and orchestra, first heard in 1999 at the MUSICA Festival in Strasbourg with the French National Orchestra (ONF) under Pascal Rophé; Viento de otoño, for ensemble, premiered in 2000 in Japan by the Tokyo Sinfonietta with Ichiro Nodaira conducting; Estudio II for four percussionists, first performed in Espinho (Portugal) by the ensemble Drumming in 2004; El arte de la siesta for solo accordion, ensemble and live electronics, given its first hearing at the MANCA festival in Nice in 2005 by the accordionist Esteban Algora, Robin Meier (RIM) and the Icarus ensemble; Saori for two kotos, theorbo, mandolin, harp and live electronics, premiered by the Ensemble 2e2m in Paris in 2010 conducted by Pierre Roulier; Metro Vox for eight solo voices, first heard in the Bastille Opera amphitheatre in Paris with the vocal ensemble Solistes XXI in 2011 under Rachid Safir; Concerto for piano and orchestra, first performed at the Canary Islands Festival by Alberto Rosado and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra in 2012 under the baton of Jonathan Nott; Haikus del mar for six percussionists, given its first hearing in the Le Corum Theatre/Ópera Berlioz in Montpellier with Les Percussions de Strasbourg in 2013; VibraZoyd for vibraphone and electronics, premiered by Miquel Bernat at the Cervantes Institute in Paris in 2013; and Sonidos Azules for bass saxophone and ensemble, first performed by Andrés Gomis and the ensemble Sonido Extremo in Badajoz (Spain) in 2015, conducted by Jordi Francés.

 

José Manuel López López studied piano, composition and orchestral conducting in Madrid (RCSMM), pupil of Luis de Pablo. He was taught by Luigi Nono at the Manuel de Falla Courses in Granada and by Franco Donatoni at the Academia Chigiana in Siena. He then moved to France to extend his training at the GMB in Bourges, later in Avignon at the Acanthes analysis and composition courses with Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Boulez. Following this phase of training, he consolidated his personal musical language investigating further in electronic music at Paris University 8 with Horacio Vaggione, and IRCAM’s Cursus (1992) in musical composition and computing, working with Tristan Murail, Philippe Manoury and Hugues Dufourt among other maestros.

 

His works are published by Universal Music Publishing Group Classical, Éditions Henry Lemoine, Éditions Musicales Transtlantiques (The Music Sales Group), and Maison ONA in France, by Editorial Piles in Spain, and by the composer himself.
