Outstanding Performer: Bessie Award to PeiJu Chien-Pott

PeiJu Chien-Pott, principal dancer of Martha Graham Dance Company, has been recognized with the Bessie Award to Outstanding Performer for her work in Martha Graham’s Ekstasis, a choreography reimagined by Virginie Mécéne with music by Catalan composer Ramon Humet: the “Interlude VII” from “Homenaje a Martha Graham” (Neu Records, 2016), written for the poems by Mario Lucarda.

As the organization said: “For bringing to life a lost Martha Graham solo from 1933, masterfully inhabiting the earthy, percussive, and fluid movements of pelvis and torso, and embodying the very essence of Graham’s ecstatic vision.”

“Interlude VII” was recorded in Auditorio de Zaragoza by the renowned Japanese shakuhachi player Kakizakai Kaoru and the Spanish percussion quartet Neopercusión.
